Lead Signal — Port of Townsville

A record trade year confirmed as the $12 billion port opens its project-cargo decade

Port of Townsville's FY2024–25 annual report confirms annual trade valued at over $12 billion — a record year. The new 14-hectare project cargo laydown area (operational April 2026) is accepting bookings, and the $690M Stage 2 Outer Harbour program remains in active funding dialogue. Port Watch
Laydown area now accepting bookings. Operators targeting CopperString and mining supply chain contracts should register with the Port's commercial team now — early movers position for preferred access as the pipeline accelerates through 2026–2027.
Action Now
Gemini Cooperation capacity discipline. The Maersk–Hapag-Lloyd alliance (operational February 2025) continues to manage slot capacity tightly across Asia–Oceania services. Importers booking beyond June should request allocation confirmation from their forwarder rather than assuming space.
Watch
Live cattle trade steady. Townsville remains one of Australia's largest live cattle export gateways — ranked second nationally after Darwin on most recent comparative data. Indonesian and Vietnamese demand signals are firm; no regulatory disruption signals detected from DAFF or ABF.
Stable
Project Pipeline Flash
CopperString 2032 — Flinders Substation groundworks active. Work commenced at the $225M Flinders Substation in February 2026 — the most visible on-ground progress on the 840km Townsville–Mount Isa line, backed by $2.4B of Queensland Government investment (2025–26 State Budget). Corridor freight demand escalates from H2 2026.
In Progress
Eva Copper Mine — FID approved. Harmony Gold approved the Final Investment Decision in November 2025 (capex USD $1.55–1.75B). First production is targeted for the second half of 2028, at roughly 65,000 tonnes of copper concentrate per year over the first five years. Supply chain operators should begin corridor mapping now.
Confirmed
Lansdown Precinct — terminal gap persists. Edify Energy's approved hydrogen facility (up to 1GW; 150,000t earmarked for export) and ABEL Energy's $1.7B green methanol plant (400,000 t/yr) are advancing — but no dedicated hydrogen or methanol export terminal exists at Port of Townsville yet.
Gap Risk
Intelligence Note — Issue #00

"The $42.2B NQ infrastructure pipeline is not evenly distributed across time. The freight uplift will be most acute between late 2026 and mid-2028. Operators who wait for ground-breaking to build capacity will already be a year behind."
